Should you Use Vitamin C on your skin? Well, Yes and No.
Vitamin C by itself is unstable and breaks down easily in light. It is also water-soluble and has a pH of about 3. This makes it unsuitable for topical application. However, vitamin C with an ethyl group attached, known as Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, is stable, soluble in both oil and water and has a pH between 5 and 6, close to the normal pH of the skin. This is the form of Vitamin C we use in our serum.
Is vitamin C serum safe to use on my skin?
When trying any new product it is best to start with a patch test. Apply a small amount to the inside of your arm and check it for reactions within 24 hours. If you do not have a reaction you might start with an application at night every second day, then daily if your skin handles it well.
Is Vitamin C serum phototoxic?
It is not necessarily phototoxic but it can reduce the melanin in the skin which would make it more sensitive to UV rays and make it photosensitive. Always use a good sunscreen if you are using the serum in the daytime. We recommend nighttime application if you do not use sunscreen.
What does Vitamin C serum actually do?
Studies show that Vitamin C, in the form of Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, applied topically can help balance skin tone and reduce dark spots. It acts as
An effective and stable skin brightening agent
Balances skin tone
Prevents Photo-aging and reduces dark spots
Increases collagen synthesis
To improve skin's elasticity
Enhance barrier function preventing skin from losing water content
Help discoloration and uneven skin tone
Stimulate microcirculation in the dermis
This is naturally found in the body in the eye, the connective tissue and the skin. Its function is to keep tissues moist and lubricated. However, as we age hyaluronic acid production decreases and may give our skin a dry and wrinkled appearance. We add it to our Vitamin C serum to
Have a slight plumping effect on the face and relieve the appearance of wrinkles
Improve collagen production
Brighten skin tone and reduce dullness
We also add the fruit acids derived from grapes, apples, lemons, oranges and sugar cane to act as a natural Alpha Hydroxy Acid. This helps:
To stimulate both elastin and collagen production
To improve the appearance of photodamaged skin
Fruit acids also
Perform as a mild exfoliant on sensitive skin
